Trustee board

The Board of Trustees shapes and approves our local strategy.

The Group Trustee Board plays a vital role in the running of a Scout Group. Trustees make decisions and carry out administrative tasks to ensure that the resources are available so that the best quality Scouting can be delivered in the Group.

The Trustee Board exists to support the Group Lead Volunteer in meeting the responsibilities of their appointment.

The board acts collectively as charity trustees of the Scout Group, and in the best interests of its members.

Responsibilities for the Board include:

  • Complying with the Policy, Organisation and Rules of The Scout Association.
  • Protecting and maintaining any property and equipment owned by and/or used by the Group.
  •  Managing the Group finances.
  •  Providing insurance for people, property and equipment.
  •  Providing sufficientresources for Scouting to operate. This includes, but is not limited to, supporting recruitment, other adult support, and fundraising activities.
  • Promoting and support the development of Scouting in the local area.
  •  Managing and implement the Safety Policy locally.
  •  Ensuring that a positive image of Scouting exists in the local community.
  • Appointing and managing the operation of any sub- Committees, including appointing Chairs to lead the sub-Committees.
  • Ensuring that Young People are meaningfully involved in decision making at all levels within the Group.

Becoming a Charity Trustee looks great on a CV and is a great way to assist the movement if being a leader maybe isn’t for you.

TheTrustee Board is formed/elected each year at our Annual General Meeting. We are always looking for new members of all ages from diverse backgrounds.

Members of the Group Trustee Board

The Group Trustee Board consists of up to 12 members.  Some trustees are members because of their role in Scouting (the ex-officio members), these are:

  • Group Scout Leader
  • Group Chairman

In addition to the ex-officio members, there are three other groups of people who may be members of the Group Trustee Board:

  • elected members – these are elected by the Group Council at the Annual General Meeting and there are normally four to six of them;
  • nominated members – these are nominated by the Group Scout Leader (e.g. the Group Chairman) at the Annual General Meeting and there must be no more than the number of elected members
  • co-opted members – these are co-opted by the Group Trustee Board to fill skills gaps and there must be no more than the number of elected members.  Co-opted members have no voting rights.

The membership is set up this way to ensure that the interests of the Group Council and the Group Scout Leader are represented, and balanced. The co-opted members are often used to bring particular skills into the Trustee Board, perhaps because of a particular project that is being undertaken or task that is being tackled.

All members (ex-officio, elected and co-opted) are Charity Trustees of the 10th Widnes Scout Group which is registered as a non-profit making charity with the Charity Commission for England and Wales.
